Chicago Urban Plunge Information and Sign Up
Eacy year since 2005, students from the Perry Service Learning program have participated in a four day service experience to Su Casa, a homeless shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence and their children on the south side of Chicago.
This trip coincides with the conclusion of our unit on homelessness and will provide participants with a first-hand perspective on urban poverty. Students will live and work at the homeless shelter for 4 days/3 nights. In the past our volunteers have prepared and served meals, performed general cleaning, winterized the building, painted rooms at the shelter, shoveled snow, raked leaves, sorted donated clothes, distributed food at a neighborhood pantry, worked at the Chicago Foodbank, and provided care to the children staying at the shelter. By the end of the 4 day experience, students will have accumulated over 20 hours of service.
Thursday, November 29th - Sunday, December 2nd, 2018
We will be traveling to Chicago via school van. Participating students will need to pay $120 for our 3-night stay. Student may pay with cash or check made payable to Perry High School. Please note…students will also need spending money to cover the cost of meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), public transportation in Chicago, and any souvenirs over the four days.
Space is limited in the van so each student is asked to bring only one bag. Each student will need to bring clothes for four days, toiletries, towel, and linens. Su Casa has separate sleeping quarters for male and female volunteers that include bunks and mattresses.
If you are interested in participating, please complete the form below ASAP.
